the smiths | "there is a light that never goes out" | the queen is dead | 1986

my second girlfriend was suzanne adams. her older brother (that pattern again) dj’d occasionally at the local community college radio station 90.5 fm wber. this channel dubbed itself “the only station that matters” and i believed it – i became the station’s most loyal audience member. i even asked my mom for the t-shirt for my fifteenth birthday (which i still have to anne’s chagrin). this became my source for the good stuff.

one of my favorite summer pastimes was going to sleep with the radio on and letting it wake me up in the wee hours and play with my half-awake consciousness. everything seemed so much stranger and interesting in that frame of mind. one morning i heard this song which stood out so distinctly that i forced myself to stay awake to find out what band it was. it was of course, the smiths.
